Two days before Christmas 2011, at the Cultural Centre of Nikaia, his Eminence Alexios Metropolitan of Nikaia, organized a special event in order to provide food to approximately 2000 needy people in the area. The 29th Athens Classic Marathon, that took place on 14 November 2011, under the auspices of the President of the Republic, Mr. Karolos Papoulias, and UNESCO, apart from its historical, cultural and athletic dimension, also displayed another very important one, its humanitarian profile, since part of the proceeds from the Marathon were donated in order to support the educational programmes of UNESCO, targeting poor children and mainly girls.

In October 2007, personalities from all over the world under the leadership of the former Secretary-General of the United Nations, H.E. Mr. Kofi Annan, were brought together in Geneva joining forces in order to establish the “Global Humanitarian Forum” (G.H.F.).
The Global Humanitarian Forum is a non governmental organisation, open to cross-cultural, cross-sectoral and pan-regional ideas and initiatives. It functions within a spirit of high ethical standards and common humanitarian values and principles independently of any political or national interests. The impacts of climate change as a challenge for the future generations with particular emphasis on the most sensitive and vulnerable population groups of the Mediterranean countries, especially sick children, is the topic of the two-day International Conference that will take place in Athens, at Megaron, the Athens Concert Hall, on June 2nd and 3rd 2009.
