The President of the International Honorary Committee of the Anniversary Year “Thermopylae – Salamis 2020” & UNESCO Goodwill Ambassador Mrs. Marianna V. Vardinoyannis was proclaimed Honorary Citizen of Salamis, on Wednesday, July 21st 2021 at the City Hall of the island in an emotional ceremony holded by the Municipality of Salamis, following a proposal of the Mayor Mr. George Panagopoulos and a Municipal Council decision.
During the event, which took place in accordance with the current sanitary measures, the Mayor of Salamis presented the President of the Committee with an honorary plaque as an expression of esteem to Mrs. Vardinoyannis and, in addition, in recognition of her invaluable offer to the island of Salamis.
At the beginning of the ceremony the Mayor of Salamis stated that «Your presence is the highest honor for our community» and added «We owe you a big thank you and your proclamation as an Honorary Citizen of Salamis is an expression of our gratitude. Please know that we all consider you in Salamis as one of us and we want you to consider us as your people. Welcome to your island!»
In her address, Mrs. Marianna V. Vardinoyannis thanked the Mayor as well as the Municipal Council and she underlined: «It is an honor for me to be proclaimed Honorary Citizen of Salamis, an island with a long history, great culture and deep tradition». I will always be next to Salamis and its people and in whatever you need».
Among other distinguished guests were: New Democracy MP Piraeus Region D. Markopoulos, SYRIZA-Progressive Alliance Parliamentary Representative and MP Piraeus Region G. Ragousis, Vice Admiral I. Pattas PN as a representative of the Chief of H.N.G.S., Deputy Regional Governor of Islands Mrs. V. Theodorakopoulou Bogri, municipal and community representatives.
The evening ended with heartfelt wishes from all and a common vision of goals and plans that will revitalise the island of Salamis.
