World heritage, both cultural and natural, is our legacy from the past, what we live with today, and what we pass on to future generations. Irrespective of where and when the magnificent cultural monuments have been created and the beauties of nature are located, they are a source of life and inspiration which belong to all the people in the world.
On the occasion of the International Decade for a Culture of Peace, the “Foundation for the Child and the Family” organised an International Conference on “Contemporary Societies – Multicultural Co-existence: The position of the child” under the auspices of UNESCO. The Conference took place at the Aristotelion University of Thessaloniki.
A book, a theatre performance and an exhibition of pictures were the three aspects of the event «Speak Truth to Power: Human Rights Defenders who change our world», which was organised in Athens on June 2002 by the Foundation for the Child and the Family, aiming to support the Greek Committee of Amnesty International. The event was held under the auspices of the President of the Hellenic Republic, Mr. Kostis Stefanopoulos, and with the sponsorship of Vardis and Marianna Vardinoyannis.
The book called «Speak Truth to Power: Human Rights Defenders who change our world» is the lifetime work of Kerry Kennedy Cuomo,
The annual Meeting of the Goodwill Ambassadors with the Director-General Mr. Koichiro Matsuura was held on February 11th and 12th 2002 at the headquarters of UNESCO in Paris.
During the Meeting, Mr. Matsuura referred to the activities of the Organisation during 2001 and highlighted the major steps made in the field of communication and co-operation between the Ambassadors, as well as to the work of all sub-directorates of the Organisation. Mr. Matsuura referred also comprehensively to the priorities and new programmes that will start being implemented during 2002, such as:
A) The programme «Education for All» which aims at eradicating illiteracy by the year 2015.
