In September 1st to 3rd 2007, about 800 young people from 100 countries, including Greece, participated in the International Youth Forum for Peace organised in Sharm El Sheikh in Egypt, with the initiative of “The Suzanne Mubarak Women’s International Peace Movement” and its President, H.E. Mrs. Suzanne Mubarak. The “Foundation for the Child and the Family” also participated in the Forum.

The International Youth Forum for Peace was entitled as “The Power of Youth for Peace. Youth Speak-We listen”. It was organised for the first time and offered young people around the world the opportunity to engage in a constructive dialogue, exchange ideas and experiences, come up with proposals of common action in order to make their dreams for a better future come true, based on the Culture of Peace.

The main issues discussed at the Forum were: young people’s free expression, their participation in the political and social status, the economic growth of young people, Internet safety and its role in communication, the international community commitments, the international solidarity, the challenges that young people have to face, and more.

“You”, said Mrs. Suzanne Mubarak, in her opening speech addressing to young people, “are the architects of tomorrow, the hope of a better future for humanity.

You should speak and we should listen. We give you the opportunity here today to construct bridges among one another, among the diversity of your cultures and populations, share your common dreams, take initiatives and walk hand by hand towards their implementation, creating the future that completely belongs to you”.

In the Forum, representatives of young people from schools, universities and non governmental organisations participated, as well as personalities of international prestige, such as representatives of the Egyptian Government, the academic and private sector, the United Nations Organisation (UNO), of international organisations such as UNICEF and the World Health Organisation (WHO) and others.

Among the conference delegates, there were members of the Board of Directors of “The Suzanne Mubarak Women’s International Peace Movement” who supported this initiative, such as the President of the Belgian Senate, Mrs. Anne-Marie Lizin, the UNESCO Goodwill Ambassador and President of the “Foundation for the Child and the Family”, Mrs. Marianna V. Vardinoyannis, the Director of the Bibliotheca Alexandrina, Dr. Ismail Serageldin, Dr. Leila Takla, Dr. Aleya Hammad, Dr. Taher Helmy, Mr. Amr Badr and others.
